Thanksgiving Crafts. To Celebrate Autumn and the Fall Season.
And remind us about the first Thanksgiving Harvest Celebration.

thanksgiving poem braceletTell a simplified story while making a bracelet of colored beads to remind the children of the first Thanksgiving celebration. The original poem found several places online was historically inaccurate.

So we just modified it. Most historians don't believe that there was turkey and pumpkin pie at that First Thanksgiving! We added information about their final landing point, the actual names of the Native tribe and the assistance that Samoset provided the Europeans.

Thanksgiving is a wonderful holiday! Thanksgiving craft ideas are abundant throughout many online sources that offer great ideas crafts for kids busy during the holiday season. Start the Autumn Holiday season right and deck the halls. Harvest, Thanksgiving is too nice a holiday to let the other more commercial holidays crowd it out. By making holiday crafts to decorate the home for Thanksgiving, you can keep this day special, too. Talk about the First Thankgiving and the meaning of being grateful for all that we have. The extended family, aunts, uncles, grandparents, etc., will be pleased to see the holiday crafts the young ones have made to decorate the house and make it cheerful for their visit.

With this bracelet you will know

The first Thanksgiving that was long ago.

The Pilgrims set sail from far away (brown)

On the Mayflower with tall white sails.  (WHITE)

They sailed many days across the ocean blue.  (several blue)

The seas were rough, but the ship came through.

The land they saw was on Massachusetts Bay (BROWN)

And they decided then and there that’s where they would stay

Of course, there was a lot of work to get all settled in,

But each and every Pilgrim was quite eager to begin.

But OH that first year was hard and black.  (BLACK)

Snow and sickness many died and others wished to go back.  (white)

They were lucky, for it wasn't long until they met

A very friendly native whose name was Samoset. (tan – or heart)

He taught the Pilgrims to plant native crops like corn

Friendship between the Wampanoag and Pilgrims was born

At Harvest, the Pilgrims celebrated in a special way

And that became the first Thanksgiving day.

A harvest time celebration was a time to give (green)

Grateful to their friends the Wampanoag who had helped them live

They cooked fish and fowl and meat all brown (BROWN)

Along with berries and nuts and wild fruits they had found. (RED or BLUE)

They prepared the native corn that they had learned to grow (yellow)

And for days there was music games- it was quite a show (special beads)

Before they ate the bounty of food and dressing

They bowed their heads and said a thankful blessing

Indian, Indian, What do you see?

as cute as it is - its inaccurate. This could be used as a lesson and creative starting point to get the kids thinking about what has been taught about

Thanksgiving and how they could modify it to make it more accurate.

Indian, Indian,

What do you see?

I see the Mayflower

looking at me.

Mayflower, Mayflower,

What do you see?

I see Plymouth Rock, waiting for me.

Plymouth Rock,

Plymouth Rock,

What do you see?

I see a teepee close by the sea. - hummm they were wigwams

Teepee, Teepee,

What do you see?

I see some Pilgrims standing near me.

Pilgrims, Pilgrims,

What do you see?

We see turkey and cranberries, (probably duck and fish and definitely deer)

Corn and Pumpkin pie, (corn yes, pie? well probably not pumpkin)

A Thanksgiving Day dinner is what we spy.
