PAPER PLATE BEACH
Who could imagine all the things you can do with a few spare paper plates?! This preschool craft we did several years ago when we were doing our unit study on the ocean and we incorporated a study of the coasts. However, it would be a perfectly suitable luau craft!
I allowed the children to choose from several different types of crafting material to create the water and the trees. They were given the opportunity to use colors, tissue or marker. (Paint would have needed drying time and I think we would have lost interest.) The stickers were an EXTRA bonus. Purchased at the Dollar Store as reward sitckers they worked beautifully with this last minute project and really made their day!
The sand would have been more "fun" I was told, if it had those little bitty sea shells we see at the store. Ah yes, if you get those then use them here and on the shell craft frames too! This project lasted for about 35 minutes with ages 3 - 6. Clean up was fairly simple since the sand was pre-bagged OUTSIDE and sealed closed.
Materials
2 Paper plates
Crayons, Markers or tissue paper
a small sandwich bag filled with play sand (optional small shells)
ocean themed stickers
toilet tube or brown construction paper
green construction paper
scissors
glue & scotch tape
Instructions
The Beach: Start by cutting a hole in half the plate (no wider than the baggie of sand) as a window to show the baggie filled sand through. Color the edges of the plate sand color.
The Ocean: The second half of the plate will be the ocean (color or cover the ocean various shades of blue)
The palm: A toilet tube (or a piece of brown construction paper rolled into a tube.) will create the trunk. Using a light colored crayon add texture. (Have the kids look at pictures of real palm trees to give them inspiration)
The palm leaves: fold a sheet of paper into 8ths and cut out palm frawns. Have the children cut in the textures around the edges of the leaves.
Tape the Palms to the trunk. (We tried glue and it just didn't work)
Add your sea stickers to the ocean and the beach.
Sandwich your sand filled baggie between the two paper plates. (You want it to show through the hole you cut on your beach side of the top plate)
Glue together with a generous amount of glue
Allow time to dry before displaying on your luau buffet table or preschool craft shelf

While your children may not be able to participate in much of the cooking of Luau dinner or purchasing Luau gifts, you can put them to use by allowing them to decorate the house in anticipation with handmade Luau crafts. Our tradition is to set up a craft table with several different projects at the Luau Dinner gathering.
We use those crafts as presents for visiting family and decorations for our home.
