He is an Advent
saint
because his December 6th
feast day
always falls in early Advent (Advent begins four Sundays before Christmas between November 27 and December 3). However, Nicholas is a good Advent saint for more important reasons than the date of his special day. Whatever he did, and it is said that he did many kinds of amazing things, may not be as important as the way he did it. Nicholas became so popular because he was a faithful follower of Jesus Christ. His life clearly reflected the way each one of us is called to show God's love to others, especially those in need.Celebrating St. Nicholas on his day in Advent brings a bit of fun and festivity into homes, churches, and schools. Saint Nicholas helps us remember Christmas is a feast of love, hope, kindness and generosity.
Yes, Nicholas is a good Advent saint.
Here's a sweet craft to introduce children to the man behind the legend of Santa Claus. A WONDERFUL easy to read and understand story is available at the St. Nicholas Center.
Here's are version of a craft inspired by the St. Nicholas Center.
toilet paper roll
template
scissors
glue
cotton balls (about 3)
markers, pens, paints
red construction paper
gold chenille stem (pipe cleaner)
optional small rubber band
Roll up tube in a piece of red colored construction paper and be sure you have enough to wrap all the way around it as well, overlapping slightly.
Coat the construction paper with glue and wrap it around the tube. Set it aside to dry. (optional rubber band can be used here to keep the "clothing" on and make a belt)
Cut out the face template that has been printed on flesh colored paper. (or color in with crayons, marker or paint) and cut out the hands.
Draw a face.
Rip apart a cotton ball and create a beard for St. Nicholas
Cut out a hat (miter) out of scrap red. Draw a cross.
Glue the head to the top of the tube.
Glue on the hands
shape the chenille stem into a staff.
Glue on the staff ( we had to stuff ours into the rubber band belt)
